Key Ingredients: Nutrition for Skin Health

The must-have ingredients for skin health according to Lynn Mason, Mavala’s In-House Nail and Skincare Expert

Decoding which ingredients to look for when it comes to skincare can feel confusing, with new hero ingredients seemingly launching every week. Mavala, pioneers in high-tech Swiss produced skincare with a focus on care, are always looking for ways to help decode the language of beautiful skin. So, could choosing skincare the same way you’d plan your meals be the key? When looking for hero ingredients that keep skin healthy on the inside, they’ll often also be found on the INCI list of powerful, natural skincare.

Mavala’s in-house expert Lynn Mason on hand with her recommendations:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an absolute superhero ingredient – a potent antioxidant that nourishes your skin either applied topically or sipped with your morning orange juice! Internally, Vitamin C works to boost your immune system, promotes radiant skin and also helps produce collagen for bouncy, plump skin. In your skincare it will help fight against aggressors such as pollution, while deceasing the appearance of sunspots and pigmentation, as well as protecting against future damage. It also helps to give an instant glow to the skin and encourages the production of more collagen and elastin for a firm and plump complexion.”

Find it in your food; blueberries, broccoli, guava, kiwi, oranges, papaya, strawberries and sweet potatoes

Find it in your skincare; Mavala Vitalising Healthy Glow Serum, (Look Fantastic; RRP: £38.50)

“The skin-enhancing formula is infused with pearls to create an instant glow. Melting effortlessly into the skin, the Vitamin C enriched serum refreshes and energises dull skin and restores radiance for a healthier complexion. Also containing in vitalizing Swiss Apricot extract, which delivers antioxidant, toning and exfoliating benefits, skin is left appearing fresh, hydrated and energized with features rested.”

Vitamin E

“Vitamin E is another fantastic antioxidant, which works to protect the skin from damage, while also supporting and strengthening a healthy skin barrier. A strong skin barrier means skin retains more water and stays more hydrated – meaning less dry and dull skin, as well as minimising sensitivity.”

Find it in your food: Almonds, avocado, hazelnuts, pine nuts and sunflower oil

Find it your skincare: Mavala Tinted Lip Balms (Look Fantastic, RRP: £7.20)

“Formulated with shea butter, aloe vera and apricot extract, the Mavala Tinted Lip Balms are gentle and made to care for the skin. The balms nourish, moisturise and protect lips that are stressed and dry. Apricot extract is rich in vitamin E, which works to protect the delicate area. Suitable for very dry lips and even children above 3 years old!”

Healthy fats

“Fatty acids act as a natural moisturiser for your skin, improving dry patches and increasing elasticity. Essential fatty acids such as omega-3 aren’t produced by the body and work to both nourish the skin and reduce inflammation.”

Find it in your food: Avocados, oily fish, nuts and seeds

Find it in your skincare: Mavala Nutri Elixir Ultimate Cream (Look Fantastic, RRP: £28.50)

“This anti-ageing treatment revitalises the skin with Swiss Linseed Oil, a patented pro-lipid booster and bioactivated vegetal oils complex, which is rich in fatty acids. As a soothing and softening oil, this will help produce a tighter and bouncier appearance on the skin. Particularly rich on Omegas, linseed oil will also help create a stronger skin barrier and acts as an anti-inflammatory on the skin.”
