Our Beauty Expert Answers Your Burning Questions!

Our beauty expert, Lynn Mason, went live on Instagram recently to answer some of the burning questions we are regularly asked by our followers.

  1. How do I make my natural manicure last 3+ days

My first tip is to always prepare your nails to ensure they are primed properly. A technique we often use is to ‘squeak the nail’, which means cleaning the nails with gentle acetone to get any excess oil of the nails. You’ll know nails are at the right cleanliness when they ‘squeak’ under the removal pad. Next, wash your hands so there is no residue of remover on your nails at all.

My second tip to a long lasting mani is to start off with a basecoat. I can’t recommend enough the Mavala OO2 Base Coat. It’s not only protective from stains or any discolouration but also makes polish last longer. Its like a primer for your nail polish, and it never ever dries completely.  Instead, it goes tacky and creates fibres that hang on to the colour, making it last longer with better durability.

My next tip is with your polish. Always make sure it’s the right consistency. If its gloopy, it will be too thick and peel off and won’t last long. The best way to revive the consistency of the polish, is to add thinner. The smell of nail polish is actually the solvent starting to evaporate, so re-adding solvent will help loosen the pigment making it the perfect consistency for application.

Do two nice thin controlled layers of polish, and then importantly finish off with topcoat. This will give you durability, shine, brilliance and protection. My favourite of our topcoats is our Gel effect topcoat. It’s not a gel that has to be cured, but it gives the domed finish and shine effect you’d expect from gel. You paint it on the nail, and it dries really quickly and gives more durability than a normal topcoat.

The biggest tip of all is reapply topcoat every other day. As you go your day to day, hands and nails experience wear and tear, and as you do, you’re grazing away the topcoat making the colour susceptible to chipping. Applying a topcoat will make it salon fresh and reinforce durability.

2. How do Mavala come up with all the ideas for collection?

We bring out colour collections four times a year to go with the seasons. Mavala Switzerland are very on top of trends in fashion and beauty and will look at Fashion shows and take inspiration for there to ensure its always producing the most stylish, trending collections. Also, the Pantone colour of the year influences our creativity!

3. Cuticles… to cut or not to cut?

Theres a lot of confusion about cuticle preparation and care.

We need to make sure we’re gentle at the base of the nail because it hasn’t fully keratinised yet, so is very delicate. Whatever happens at the bottom of the nail will affect it as it grows up. For example, white spots are sign of trauma for the nail, and ridges and weakening will be a result issues at the base of the nail.

In short, you shouldn’t cut away all the skin at the bottom of the nail.

The true cuticle is the hard skin on the surface of the nail. This skin on the nail plate will inhibit growth, and will also snap as the nail grows and cause hangnails. It’s important in your nail care routine to look after the true cuticle. The wall around the nail doesn’t want to be cut, the skin is there to protect us and our bodies from infection. If we cut it away, we leave it susceptible to infection. The body is intelligent and will send more skin cells thinking it’s a wound, creating more hard skin.

Our Mavala Cuticle Remover does all the hard work, so you don’t need to do the manual action. It contains potassium hydroxide, and you paint it on the base of the nail and leave for 2-3 mins. It then dissolves away the skin that’s stuck on the nail plate., so you can gentle roll it away with manicure stick wrapped in cotton wool.

To help with the dry and unsightly, ragged cuticle, regularly try to soften the cuticle and moisturise it. The Cuticle Cream is one of my favourite products. Its like a balm and is thick and rich and melts on your nails. This can go on bare nails, on top of polish or on top of gels and all you need is the size of a grain of rice for one hand. Try to apply cuticle cream to the nails every single night before you go to bed. The massage movement stimulates blood and helps stimulate the nail, and then the hours you’re asleep the balm can get to work to soften the cuticles. It’s beautiful.

4. What is the best Mavala Skincare for Mature Skin that also has an oily T Zone

Mavala is known for its natural nail care, but we also have premium Swiss skincare too, all made in Switzerland. The first product I’d recommend for combination skin is the Pore Detox Foaming Cleanser. It is perfect for congestion without drying the skin. Its rich, thick and creamy, and has Alpine Willow herb that helps regulate the oil and sebum in the skin. Its gentle enough to be used by all the family and can also be used on the body.

In the day, you can use the Hydra Matt cream, this moisturising cream can go on the T zone its absorbent and keeps you mattified all day. Perfect as a make-up base.

Lastly, our most popular anti-aging product is the Anti age Pro Nighttime release care. It’s a serum that goes on clean skin at night, and can go on the face neck and decolletage as well as lips and round the eye. It’s a time release product and detoxifies, repairs and corrects skin throughout the night. It has water cress to detoxify and it repairs with Alpine rose which improves the skins barrier. It also contains Arbutin which helps even out the skin tone and help reduce the visible look of age spots. Age spots can appear on the face or back of the hands, and this ingredient will helpreduce the look of age spots and pigmentation.

95% of people that tested this product found their wrinkle and fine lines were smoothed out, 96% found night after night their skin was more radiant. 100% found their dark ages spots and pigmentation was reduced, it’s a wonder product in a bottle. Its all in one so perfect for all.
