Why You Shouldn’t Cut Your Cuticles
When getting a manicure, we often see the nail technician trimming our cuticles — or we may even do it ourselves at home using various tools to achieve a clean look. However, many people don’t realise that removing cuticles can actually do more harm than good. Removing cuticles can lead to irritation, infection, and slower nail growth. Our nail expert, Lynn Mason, explains why keeping your cuticles intact is key to healthy, beautiful nails.
“Cuticles act as a protective barrier between the nail and skin. When they’re cut, it creates an entry point for bacteria and other germs, which can lead to infections, irritation, and even more ragged cuticles over time.
Instead of cutting, I recommend softening the cuticles and gently pushing them back using a wooden manicure stick wrapped in cotton. This gives you the same clean, polished look, without the risk.
Mavala Cuticle Remover is perfect for softening the cuticles safely. Follow with Mavala Cuticle Oil to deeply hydrate and protect the area, leaving your nails looking healthy and salon-worthy. And remember, never use a metal tool to push back cuticles, as it can damage the delicate nail matrix.”
Product recommendations:

Mavala Cuticle Remover (RRP £14.75 – available at Look Fantastic) softens and removes overgrown cuticles. Simply apply directly on cuticles with the brush and then after a few seconds overgrown cuticles are softened and can be “erased” with a manicure stick wrapped in cotton.

Mavala Nail Cuticle Manicure Sticks (RRP £5.25 – available at Nail Polish Direct) are used for pushing cuticles back and forth to clean the sides of the nail. Wrap the bevelled end of the stick with cotton wool to roll back cuticles and remove dead skin.
